Kappa
Kappa
One of the most recognizable yokai in pop culture, kappa are water loving yokai that can be found in streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, etc all throughout Japan. With webbed feet, water resistant skin, a turtle like beak and shell, the kappa are built for swimming and living in water habitats. Though their most distinguishing and important feature of a kappa is the plate like depression on top of their heads that must always be filled with water. It is said that this is the main source of a Kappa’s power and if the dish ever becomes empty, the kappa will be paralyzed and may even die. Though you may encounter a fun, mischievous kappa from time to time, beware that not all kappa are friendly!
One of my absolute favorite Yokai!
